Lemon Veritas is a cocktail for those who prefer the purity and precision of a true vodka martini. It celebrates simplicity, where every detail serves a purpose. “Truth in lemon” is its guiding principle – that in its clean brightness lies a certain honesty, a moment of clarity that stills the noise and sharpens the mind.
The drink itself is the driest of dry martinis, polished to perfection with a whisper of lemon oil giving it a silk-like texture. The lemon peel garnish releases a subtle perfume that lifts the vodka’s cool neutrality into something quietly radiant.
Set on the bar or in the soft light of a corner banquette, its crystalline transparency glows with a pale golden hue — like distilled sunlight. Silent and eternal, Lemon Veritas is refined indulgence made visible, light captured in a glass, clarity in liquid form, and a toast yielding truth.
Making Lemon Oil
Wash and peel the lemons in large strips using a y-peeler. Peel carefully, leaving ALL the bitter white pith behind. Reserve 1 lemon peel for each cocktail and place all that remains in a small pot with the sunflower oil. Warm the oil on the lowest heat possible occasionally swirling the pan for 15 minutes. Do not boil!
Turn off the heat, cover and steep until it cools to room temperature. Strain out the peels and store the oil in an air tight jar, refrigerated for 2 to 3 weeks.
I credit a friend and former business associate Harold as my muse for this cocktail. He has discovered that the best things in life are simple. In fact, I may have gone too far by adding that lemon peel. Print
