The search for the perfect Bloody Mary mix is a never-ending pursuit—and perhaps one that evolves as taste and cocktail pairings change over time. This is the result of plenty of trial and error, driven by an unlikely goal – creating a mix to complement bourbon and maple syrup without being overwhelmed. Along the way, further tasting proved it works just as beautifully with the traditional standby, vodka.
That said, I’ve never been a great fan of Bloody Mary offerings – even from the best watering holes. Too often the vodka dilutes the mix, leaving the drink thin and watery rather than bold and savory. This recipe solves that problem with two unexpected additions—tomato paste and xanthan gum—which give the mix real body and presence. The result is a thick, almost chewy Bloody Mary that sips smoothly and delivers deep, savory flavor in every mouthful.
Have I finally discovered the perfect Bloody Mary mix? Time will tell. In the meantime taste it in my new cocktail, New Moon Rising.
