A Night at The Savoy Grill
There are few places in the world that capture the soul of a city quite like The Savoy Hotel does for London. On each trip across the Atlantic, we find ourselves drawn to its doors—not just for the grandeur, but for one deeply satisfying reason. We crave an English Beef Wellington, and nowhere does it better than The Savoy Grill.
The Hotel: Old World Opulence, Modern Warmth
The Savoy Hotel is not simply a place to stay, it’s a destination, an experience and a sensorial feast. From the moment the doorman welcomes you beneath the Art Deco façade, you step into a world steeped in luxury. The lobby is always alive with fresh flowers and rich with the perfume of tradition. There’s elegance in every detail—from the gleaming marble floors to the upscale boutiques tucked inside the building. The entire space hums with quiet and determined sophistication.
We begin our evening in The American Bar, which boasts a cocktail legacy like no other. Bartender Harry Craddock, the man behind the classic Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), still casts a long shadow of inspiration. You might start your night with a perfectly mixed Hanky Panky or opt for something new—the bartenders are artists, and they make each drink a moment.
The Dinner: A Masterclass in British Cuisine
Dinner at The Savoy Grill is a celebration—of food, of service, and of tradition. Listed as a Michelin restaurant of distinction, the Grill blends the best of classic British and French cuisine under the careful eye of Gordon Ramsay’s culinary team. On this visit we were honored to meet Restaurant Director Thierry Tomasin, whose kind hospitality added something truly special to the experience.
The Food
Without question and the primary reason we dined here is the Beef Wellington. It is perfection wrapped in golden puff pastry, layered with mushroom duxelles, served with glazed shiitake mushrooms and truffle. With a side of silky, buttery pommes puree and a glass of Burgundy our entree was rich, savory and melt-in-your-mouth.
Desserts
The Apple Tart Tatin with Madagascar vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce is insanely sweet, crisp and indulgent. Thank goodness it is intended for two or I may not have gotten a taste!
Neither of us can ignore Gordon’s Sticky Toffee Pudding. It’s a British classic that always satisfies. Both desserts are accompanied by Americano coffee to finish, grounding the entire evening in one final, fragrant sip.
The Atmosphere: Soak It In
The Savoy Grill invites you to slow down. Let the lighting, the impeccable service, and the quiet murmur of other diners remind you that fine dining is not just about the food—it’s about how the experience makes you feel. Here, you’re not simply eating; you’re participating in a ritual that’s been perfected over decades.
A Peek Behind the Curtain
If your curiosity is piqued, The Savoy is also the subject of a Netflix docuseries. Across two seasons—one pre-pandemic, one post—you’ll meet Tierry and the real people who keep this iconic institution running. The staff stories are as captivating as the hotel itself, giving you an even deeper appreciation for every plate, pour, and polished detail.
